Phil Keaggy/GMA Week

Tuesday, April 12, I attended the GMA Show Case at the Renaissance hotel in Nashville TN, I went only to here Phil Keaggy, but was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed the other performers also. There was a level of professionalism that could just felt walking into the room. The real treat was when Phil strapped on his guitar and started playing the Eric Clapton song Crossroads with Michael Tait. Phil personified confidence and humility that showed from the moment that he walked on to the stage. He doesn’t boast or give the impression that he is one of the greatest guitar player in the world. You just know that he loves what he is doing and that God is blessed thru his playing.

What is very sad is that the music industry does not afford Phil the same recognition as so many of the younger players. Even to a greater concern was the conversation that I heard from one of the younger musician as he talked on his cell phone. The language of some one I might expect to here in the back room of a bar and not from someone representing gospel music. Have we gotten to the place where playing gospel music is our way to reach stardom? The drive of so many young musicians to get a record deal, tour and make a lot of many has over shadowed the true meaning of what gospel music is all about. Maybe we should all take a lesson from Phil and let our lives and our music bless God.
